Euro 2020 | Group Stage Predictions

Welcome to the Euro 2020 blog, throughout the tournament you will see predictions and reviews, we will first begin at the very first stage, the groups.

Disclaimer: Some group predictions may be quicker than others.

Group A
Italy
Switzerland
Turkey
Wales

Looking at the group and the way it was drawn, after much deliberation, I am expecting the outcome to remain the same after the games have been completed, it is important to remember that the four best third placed teams in Groups A to F with the most points will go through to the knockout stages.

Predicted Final Group A Standings: Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Wales.

Group B
Belgium
Denmark
Finland
Russia

Belgium are group winners, for me, this is their last chance to win a major competition with their current squad, Denmark tend to play well and have good runs in European competitions, it will be interesting to see how Finland fair on their debut, Russia could surprise one or two like they did in the last World Cup.

Predicted Final Group B Standings: Belgium, Denmark, Russia, Finland.

Group C
Austria
Netherlands
North Macedonia
Ukraine

In all honesty, I do not know anything about the teams in this group in terms of how they are currently playing, so lets move swiftly on to the final standings, best luck to all teams involved here.

Predicted Final Group C Standings: Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria, North Macedonia.

Group D
Croatia
Czech Republic
England
Scotland

It's a very interesting group to predict because it contains England and Scotland, two home nations in the same group. Croatia have the likes of Luka Modric and other experienced players in their team to help them make it to the next stage, we already know about the quality of players England have, the key factor that is making me lower expectations about the team's chances is the manager, Gareth Southgate, his lack of squad management could very much cost them later on. Admittedly, I don't know too much about Czech Republic's team, if you could tell me, then that would be greatly appreciated, they kick off their campaign against Scotland on Monday.

Predicted Final Group D Standings: England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland.

Group E
Poland
Slovakia
Spain
Sweden

Poland have one of the most underrated players in the game right now, Robert Lewandowski, Slovakia are another team I am unaware of, Spain are without the experience of Sergio Ramos, at the time of writing this, Sergio Busquets has tested positive for Covid, which could leave their opening game with Sweden in doubt. Sweden will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is injured, despite coming out of international football retirement.

Predicted Final Group E Standings: Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia.

Group F
France
Germany
Portugal
Hungary

Here we go, this is the "Group of Death" France are the reigning world champions and will be looking to add the Euro 2020 tournament to their list of wins, Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kante, Antoine Griezmann and a returning Karim Benzema bring so much quality and fire power, that array of players is something you put together on a FIFA mode (other games are available) Germany are building for the future, the returning Thomas Muller will be determined to help a young team go far and possibly win it all, we shall see of course. Portugal are the reigning champions after defeating France 1-0 in 2016. The key player is definitely Cristiano Ronaldo, although Bruno and Jota shouldn't be overlooked despite having unsuccessful seasons for their Premier League teams, do not underestimate Hungary here as they will look to upset the apple cart.

Predicted Final Group F Standings: France, Germany, Portugal, Hungary.

As mentioned earlier, the four best third placed teams who have the most points will go through to the knockout stages, six teams are listed below, however, the four teams highlighted in bold are the choices to go through.

Turkey
Russia
Austria
Czech Republic
Poland
Portugal

Top 5 Predicted Highest Goal Scorers (in no particular order)
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)
Harry Kane (England)
Kylian Mbappe'(France)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
